Were you to ask any chinese martial arts master the purpose of their art, they would tell you that the primary reason to study a martial art is to improve one's health.

The health and wellness benefits of training Wing Chun are manifold. Although an aggressive fighting style, the movements are simple and rely on natural structure and body mechanics for strength, speed and power. Clearly, the practice of any martial art requires a certain level of fitness and a heightened physical awareness. Wing Chun is no different. At the studio of Sifu Nearing the student is encouraged to seek a level of cardio fitness commensurate with the demands they wish to place on their developing Wing Chun skill.

Sifu Nearing also offers private instruction in several methods of chi gung, that is, Chinese breathing and relaxation exercises. He teaches a series of general chi gung exercises, one hundred days internal chi gung exercises, small and large circulation as well as the use of the tai chi ruler. Each open class begins with some basic chi gung exercises and is followed by an extensive, yoga based stretching routine. Essentially, Sifu Nearing feels that the main purpose of studying a martial art is to improve and maintain one's health. This should be accomplished by exercise through the practice of Wing Chun, good diet and keeping oneself internally healthy by practicing chi gung.
